The Hydrogen Rainbow & Water for Hydrogen

October 20, 2022 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT

The webinar presents two topics:

Investigating the viability and safety of Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement: an approach that removes CO2, combats ocean acidification, and could scale up to make a Planetary impact.

August 18, 2022 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT

The IPCC is clear that avoiding the worst impacts of combating climate change will require both drastic emissions cuts and billion-tonne-per-year-scale (gigatonne scale) removal of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The ocean already takes up roughly 1/3 of anthropogenic emissions, and is by far the largest carbon reservoir in direct atmospheric contact. For these reasons, research into ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) strategies has increased dramatically.

Life cycle assessment's role in getting Atlantic Canada to net zero emissions

July 21, 2022 1:00pm – 3:06pm ADT

Life cycle thinking has a critical role to play in the transition to net zero emissions by ensuring that measures taken to reduce GHG emissions are effective.  In this webinar, life cycle assessment (LCA) practitioner, Nathan Ayer from EarthShift Global, will share examples of where the application of life cycle thinking will be particularly important:  1) evaluating the GHG emissions of decarbonization measures that rely on fuel switching, 2) characterizing the GHG reduction potential of emerging technologies, such as carbon capture and storage, 3) ensuring quality criteria and p

How to use energy system models to analyze paths to net zero emissions

June 23, 2022 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT

The path to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 in Atlantic Canada is both time- and resource-constrained.  Energy system models can be used in this context to compare climate change mitigation options and to strategically plan for meeting climate change goals through cost-effective and timely means.  To provide decision-making support, however, models must be robustly configured with appropriate data and assumptions and their results carefully tested, analyzed, and contextualized by the limitations of modelling exercises.  In this webinar, energy system modeller Cameron Wade

Advancing environmental monitoring capabilities for the tidal industry in the Bay of Fundy

June 9, 2022 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT

The Pathway Program, a collaborative $3 million, multi-year initiative led by Net Zero Atlantic, wraps up in March of 2022.  Through a breadth of research projects conducted over the past several years, the program successfully advanced environmental effects monitoring capabilities for the tidal industry in the Bay of Fundy.  In this webinar, Pathway Program partners DP Energy, SOAR, and FORCE will 1) report on the work they carried out as part of collaborative initiative, 2) share notable findings, successes, and lessons learned, and 3) discuss next steps for the tidal industry a

Alba Nova - Smart Grid Pilot

May 26, 2022 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT

Equilibrium Engineering (Canada) and StorTera (Scotland) partnered with the Town of Berwick and Dalhousie University to launch an exciting smart grid project under Natural Resource Canada's Power Forward Challenge.  Join us as we hear about the Alba Nova - Smart Grid Pilot.  A project focused on supporting the Town of Berwick's existing electrical utility.  The installation of a mixture of energy storage assets in combination with solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and a novel distributed artificial intelligence (AI) control system will help to shape Berwick's future electric gr

Repurposing Used Electric Vehicle Batteries as Grid Energy Storage

May 5, 2022 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT

The battery-powered electric vehicle (EV) is a key technological solution needed to decarbonize the global economy, and production of new EVs is already growing exponentially. However, this solution also introduces a new problem: what will we do with many millions of used EV batteries when today’s EVs reach end of life? While cost-effective recycling will ultimately be critical, used EV batteries can first be repurposed as a more sustainable and affordable means to store energy on the electricity grid and expedite grid decarbonization.
