Opportunities for Thermal Energy Storage and Demand Response

February 24, 2022 – February 24, 2202

In Nova Scotia, a large portion of the energy used in buildings provides space heating and hot water. This large heat energy demand is also an opportunity to store energy when it’s available, for later use, to respond to temporal variations in renewable energy supply. The NSCC Applied Energy Research team is working on several research projects with industry partners to develop and test systems for storing and managing heat energy.

EfficiencyOne White Paper 2050: Net-Zero Carbon Nova Scotia

January 13, 2022 1:00pm – 2:00pm AST

Nova Scotia has committed to be net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. While the province has achieved significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions since 2005, and is a leader in Canada, there is no single action that will get us to net-zero by 2050. Given the challenge to achieve net-zero, EfficiencyOne, in collaboration with Ralph Torrie, has authored a White Paper that explores the technological and related challenges and opportunities inherent in achieving a steep decline in greenhouse gas emissions and also identifies strategies to get to net-zero.

Hydrogen's Role in Global Decarbonisation

November 18, 2021 11:00am – 12:00pm AST

This webinar will review the potential for clean hydrogen to play a significant role in decarbonizing global energy systems, considering various production methods, demand drivers, and potential solutions for transporting hydrogen around the world. Factors influencing costs will be covered, as will policy and regulatory issues which will affect the rate of growth of this exciting new sector. The context will reflect OERA's interests in Atlantic Canada and the opportunities which clean hydrogen can be expected to bring to this area.

Testing of 360-Degree Imaging Technologies for Improved Animal Detection around Tidal Energy Installations

October 21, 2021 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT

The research goal was to conduct a field study to test the performance of a new imaging camera system mounted on a floating tidal platform deployed in Grand Passage, Bay of Fundy.  Field testing featured testing of different camera mount locations on the platform in order to optimize field-of-view, maximize ambient light conditions, and importantly, to minimize confounding factors such as bubbles, vibration and turbidity in the upper 15 m of the water column. In addition, the prototype 360 camera was mounted adjacent to an ARIS Explorer 300 acoustic camera to draw compar

Opportunities and Challenges for Hydrogen in Newfoundland & Labrador

September 9, 2021 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT

In early 2021, OERA in partnership with NRCan commissioned a feasibility study to examine the potential for hydrogen to aid decarbonization and grow the economy in Newfoundland & Labrador. The study expands on the previously completed Maritimes Hydrogen Study to look at how the hydrogen sector could evolve across Atlantic Canada. Results span the entire value chain including hydrogen production, transmission, distribution, and end-use.

Marine Mammal Observer Program: Whale Tails & Other Stories of the Outer Bay of Fundy

July 22, 2021 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT

In-stream tidal turbines may play an important part in energy security for coastal communities, particularly those in remote areas. However, questions remain regarding how marine animals interact with these devices.  Marine observation has a valuable role in helping humans develop a healthier relationship with the ocean, including evaluating impacts of tidal devices on marine animals. Shelley Lonergan will speak to her decades of experience on the water both as a whale tour guide and whale researcher.
