Testing of 360-Degree Imaging Technologies for Improved Animal Detection around Tidal Energy Installations

October 21, 2021 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT

The research goal was to conduct a field study to test the performance of a new imaging camera system mounted on a floating tidal platform deployed in Grand Passage, Bay of Fundy.  Field testing featured testing of different camera mount locations on the platform in order to optimize field-of-view, maximize ambient light conditions, and importantly, to minimize confounding factors such as bubbles, vibration and turbidity in the upper 15 m of the water column. In addition, the prototype 360 camera was mounted adjacent to an ARIS Explorer 300 acoustic camera to draw compar

Opportunities and Challenges for Hydrogen in Newfoundland & Labrador

September 9, 2021 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT

In early 2021, OERA in partnership with NRCan commissioned a feasibility study to examine the potential for hydrogen to aid decarbonization and grow the economy in Newfoundland & Labrador. The study expands on the previously completed Maritimes Hydrogen Study to look at how the hydrogen sector could evolve across Atlantic Canada. Results span the entire value chain including hydrogen production, transmission, distribution, and end-use.

Marine Mammal Observer Program: Whale Tails & Other Stories of the Outer Bay of Fundy

July 22, 2021 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT

In-stream tidal turbines may play an important part in energy security for coastal communities, particularly those in remote areas. However, questions remain regarding how marine animals interact with these devices.  Marine observation has a valuable role in helping humans develop a healthier relationship with the ocean, including evaluating impacts of tidal devices on marine animals. Shelley Lonergan will speak to her decades of experience on the water both as a whale tour guide and whale researcher.

Webinar Series

Offshore wind – a global perspective on its applicability in Atlantic Canada

June 24, 2021 10:00am – 11:00am ADT

Join us for a webinar on offshore wind in Atlantic Canada. Aegir Insights will discuss the enabling conditions required to attract offshore wind investment to a new market. This webinar will explore international lessons learned, comment on offshore wind/hydrogen projects, and provide advice on what steps Nova Scotia could take if the province wanted to pursue offshore wind as part of its future energy mix.

Webinar Series

Ancillary Services from Variable Renewable Energy Resources: A Strategy for Supporting their Increased Market Penetration

April 27, 2021 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT

The presentation will review:
(1) the role that variable output renewable energy resources (i.e., wind, solar and batteries) can play with respect to the provision of various ancillary services that are essential to reliable electricity system operations;
(2) how the provision of these ancillary services can support increased market opportunities for these resources; and
(3) how such a framework might be implemented in Nova Scotia and other electricity systems.

Automating the post-processing of noisy hydroacoustic fish surveying for monitoring tidal turbines

March 25, 2021 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT

DeepSense partnered with the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) and OERA to create a machine learning model to automate the post-processing and analysis of hydroacoustic fish surveys in extremely noisy environments suitable for tidal turbines such as the Bay of Fundy. FORCE use hydroacoustic echosounder surveys to evaluate the impact of tidal turbines on marine life in the Bay of Fundy.  In order to analyze the survey data, manual pre-processing is currently required to annotate the data.

Climate change mitigation through energy system modelling

February 25, 2021 1:00pm – 2:00pm AST

Atlantic Canada is undergoing an energy transition that will impact energy production, energy consumption, employment prospects and long-term investment decisions. To effectively support this transition while enabling sustainable economic growth, it is necessary to understand the effects, synergies, and limitations of regional decarbonization strategies.

Maritime Regional Wind Energy Resources: Determining preferred regions for additional onshore and offshore wind energy development

February 11, 2021 1:00pm – 2:00pm AST

This webinar presents a model and results that examine characteristics of the wind resource around the Canadian Maritime provinces. While significant wind turbine generating capacity has already been installed, it has sought to minimize cost of energy. This new model uses temporal and spatial modeling and examines other metrics such as intermittency to guide the geographic siting of future wind farms. A primary outcome of this research are "Venn diagram" like maps of the Maritime region showing overlap of various positive metrics.
