How Does Sound Travel in High Energy Environments? Effectiveness of Acoustic Monitoring Systems and Turbine Audibility Assessment

December 10, 2020 1:00pm – 2:00pm AST

The researchers are designing and implementing a long-term acoustic monitoring program to support tidal energy development in the Bay of Fundy. Specialized acoustic instrumentation was deployed for a two-month period in Grand Passage to advance understanding how turbulence affects the ability to detect marine mammals, and to what extent these species can detect a tidal turbine. State-of-the-art hydrophones were deployed together with an active source that generates dolphin-like whistles and clicks.

A Feasibility Study of Hydrogen Production, Storage, Distribution, and Use in Atlantic Canada

November 25, 2020 1:00pm – 2:00pm AST

This presentation will outline the key findings and results from a feasibility study commissioned by OERA, in partnership with the Nova Scotia Department of Energy & Mines, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Heritage Gas Limited, and Liberty Utilities, to access the economic opportunities and technical challenges of hydrogen production, storage, distribution, and use in Atlantic Canada. This work supports the region’s broad energy policy objectives related to climate change, inclusive economic development, and sustainable development of energy resources.

Sustainable Development – The Sustainable Development Goals and the Energy Sector

November 19, 2020 1:00pm – 2:00pm AST

Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising future generations. But how do we begin to tackle the enormous global challenges we face, such as poverty, inequality and climate change, and how do we measure success? To help guide us, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by all UN member states in 2015. The SDGs set ambitious targets across 17 areas—such as clean and affordable energy, climate action, and clean water—to meet by 2030.

Real-time detection of marine mammals in high flow environments

October 22, 2020 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT

This talk will focus on the development of a remote sensing node to detect the presence of marine mammals in tidal environments.

Tethers Redefined: Hybrid ROVs and New Applications in Open Water and Under Ice

August 20, 2020 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT

Both tethered (ROV) and untethered (AUV) systems have proven to be highly valuable tools for a range of application undersea. Certain enabling technologies coupled with recent advances in robotic systems make it possible to consider supplementing many of the functions performed by these vehicles with appropriately designed semi-autonomous vehicles that are far less expensive operate yet able to perform a range of interventions under direct human control.

Energy Transition: What’s the role of innovation in the shift to a greener economy?

June 22, 2020 3:00pm – 4:00pm ADT

We discussed “Energy Transition: What’s the role of innovation in the shift to a greener economy?” Fostering innovation is expected to contribute to sustainable economic development with better environmental outcomes. But how will the economic fallout of the pandemic affect the speed of energy industry innovation? Should we use recovery funds to invest in innovation, given that it takes time and for every success there are several failures?

Development of Acoustic Doppler Aquatic Animal Monitoring (ADAAM) for application to marine life movement in high-energy tidal channels

May 21, 2020 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT

Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) are a standard tool used for measuring ocean currents.
