Repurposing Used Electric Vehicle Batteries as Grid Energy Storage

Chris White Webinar

Chris White, M.A.Sc, E.I.T. – PhD Candidate, Dalhousie University

The battery-powered electric vehicle (EV) is a key technological solution needed to decarbonize the global economy, and production of new EVs is already growing exponentially. However, this solution also introduces a new problem: what will we do with many millions of used EV batteries when today’s EVs reach end of life? While cost-effective recycling will ultimately be critical, used EV batteries can first be repurposed as a more sustainable and affordable means to store energy on the electricity grid and expedite grid decarbonization. In this webinar, PhD Candidate Chris White will provide an overview of electricity grid energy storage, repurposed EV battery systems, and the experimental research being conducted at Dalhousie University’s Renewable Energy Storage Laboratory.
