Program: ECT-PEI: Clean Technology Challenge
Priority Research Theme: Agricultural Applications
Awarded: September 2025
Project Overview
Bluefield Seeding Solutions Inc. (BSSI), a PEI-based Agri-tech company, is developing an innovative clean technology called Precise Product Placement (PPP) to address the environmental and efficiency challenges of fertilizer application in potato farming. The primary objective of this project is to design and validate a precision fertilizer delivery system that places nutrients exactly where and when the crop needs them— reducing nitrogen loss, improving uptake, and significantly lowering nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions from agricultural soils.
Excess nitrogen use in conventional farming contributes to high GHG emissions, increased costs, and long- term soil degradation. The PPP system builds on BSSI’s existing seed sensing platform and introduces a new subsystem that uses real-time planting feedback to control in-row fertilizer release. This ensures fertilizer is applied precisely in the root zone and only when seed contact is confirmed, improving both accuracy and sustainability.
The expected outcome is a field-validated, commercial-ready technology that enables farmers to reduce fertilizer input while maintaining or improving yields. By targeting fertilizer use, the system supports more efficient use of nitrogen and aligns with climate-smart agriculture practices. The technology will be tested and refined through live field trials on PEI farms, generating critical data to model emissions reductions and inform future product iterations.
The PPP project directly supports the ECT-PEI challenge’s goal of advancing clean technologies with the potential to deliver long-term GHG reductions beyond 2030. It also contributes to economic growth through commercialization and job creation, while supporting farmers in their transition to more sustainable, low- emission practices.
