Across Atlantic Canada, efforts to establish a competitive hydrogen economy are gaining traction supported by a new assessment offering a comprehensive view of the region’s capacity to support hydrogen development and inform strategic decision-making.
The Atlantic Hydrogen Alliance has released on April 7th, the Atlantic Canada Hydrogen Supply Chain Assessment and Development Plan. Conducted by Deloitte LLP under the direction of the Atlantic Hydrogen Alliance, in partnership with Energy NL and Net Zero Atlantic, the study draws on input from industry and government stakeholders. Funding was provided by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), the Province of Nova Scotia, Opportunities New Brunswick, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Government of Prince Edward Island.
The study examines the region’s full hydrogen value chain, from development and construction through production, storage, transportation, and end use, alongside enabling conditions such as workforce capacity, supplier readiness, and enabling policy and regulatory frameworks.
Industry Opportunity in Atlantic Canada
Atlantic Canada is uniquely positioned to develop a competitive hydrogen economy, leveraging its abundant renewable energy resources, strategic port infrastructure, established industrial expertise, and direct access to European markets. While hydrogen development remains at an early stage, activity is increasing through provincial strategies, federal policy support, and a growing pipeline of projects.
Findings indicate that advancing this potential will require alignment across infrastructure, workforce development, and market demand, alongside a robust low-carbon supply chain to attract investment, create jobs, reduce emissions, and support domestic and export markets.
“By combining technical input with engagement across sectors, this work provides practical insight to support informed decision-making. It outlines priority actions to strengthen supply chain readiness and support strategic planning across the region.”
- Ryan Keating, Project Manager at Net Zero Atlantic
The roadmap is intended to support informed decision-making and coordinated action among governments, industry, Indigenous governments and communities, rural communities, investors, and researchers as they advance hydrogen development in a rapidly evolving global energy landscape.
Perspectives from Project Partners
“Building a robust low-carbon hydrogen supply chain is essential to unlocking hydrogen’s full economic and environmental potential in Atlantic Canada. This includes attracting investment, creating quality jobs, reducing emissions in hard-to-abate sectors, and positioning the region as a competitive player in both domestic and export markets.”
- Derek Estabrook, Executive Director of the Atlantic Hydrogen Alliance
