Assessment of Clean Growth Opportunities in Nova Scotia
December 2020 – March 2021
Under the Sustainable Development Goals Act, Nova Scotia has legislated a net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emission economy by 2050. To achieve this important milestone a portfolio of decarbonization strategies will be adopted by the private and public sectors.

Phase I: Assessment of Geothermal Resources in Onshore Nova Scotia
May – November 2020
The objective of this project is to: (i) provide a review of the general types of geothermal resources in Nova Scotia (excluding shallow resources utilized by ground-source heat pumps) with reference to key regional, national and global examples; (ii) provide a preliminary evaluation of the poten

Offshore Wind Stakeholder Engagement Plan for Nova Scotia
September – November 2020
Early stakeholder engagement is an important step in the development of an offshore wind industry in Atlantic Canada. This report reviews and summarizes best practices and lessons learned from offshore wind stakeholder engagement in the US Northeast market.

Going with the Flow: Advancement of Drifting Platforms for use in Tidal Energy Site Assessment & Environmental Monitoring
April 2015 – August 2017
This research project aimed to apply a simple and low cost philosophy to ocean observation by developing an inexpensive low-profile surface drifter for use in initial assessment of potential tidal energy development opportunities. The project addressed limitations in the existing drifter de

Numerical Modeling of Tidal Turbine Behaviour under Real Turbulent Tidal Flow Conditions
December 2015 – December 2016
Researchers investigated and numerically quantified the behaviour of a tidal turbine under turbulent unsteady tidal flow, using flow data collected in the lower Bay of Fundy (Digby area).

Characterizing Tidal Flows and Turbine Power Production in Petit Passage using Oceanographic and CFD Models
September 2015 – March 2016
The goal of this project was to identify potential turbine deployment locations in Petit Passage Nova Scotia, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite volume coastal ocean models (FVCOM).

Turbulent Scale and Wake Modeling on a Horizontal Axis Turbine
January – April 2015
This project aimed to accurately simulate turbulent flow over a scaled horizontal axis tidal turbine to resolve turbulence in the near and far field regions.

Impacts of Tidal Energy Extraction on Sediment Dynamics in Minas Basin, Bay of Fundy
February 2010 – December 2012
Researchers developed a numerical hydrodynamic and sediment transport model for Minas Basin in the Bay of Fundy, focusing on the sediment dynamics of the tidal inlets and flats.

Effects of Energy Extraction on Sediment Dynamics in Intertidal Ecosystems of the Minas Basin
January 2010 – May 2012
This project assessed how the dynamics of sedimentation change when energy is extracted from a macro-tidal system. The differences in tidal prism and energy between neap and spring tidal cycles were used as a proxy for energy extraction by in-stream tidal power devices.

Assessing the Far Field Effects of Tidal Power Extraction on the Bay of Fundy, Gulf of Maine and Scotian Shelf
January 2010 – April 2012
The Bay of Fundy and Gulf of Maine system has a natural resonant period very close to the main semi-diurnal lunar tide. This results in the world’s highest tides and strong tidal currents in the Bay of Fundy, particularly in the Minas Channel and Minas Basin.
