Assessment of Clean Growth Opportunities in Nova Scotia
December 2020 – March 2021
Under the Sustainable Development Goals Act, Nova Scotia has legislated a net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emission economy by 2050. To achieve this important milestone a portfolio of decarbonization strategies will be adopted by the private and public sectors.

Valuation Method for Electric Ancillary Services
May – September 2020
The objective of this project is to define a new, enhanced power purchase agreement (PPA) for use by NSPI or an independent procurement administrator when contracting with Independent (e.g., renewable) Power Producers (IPPs).

Going with the Flow: Advancement of Drifting Platforms for use in Tidal Energy Site Assessment & Environmental Monitoring
April 2015 – August 2017
This research project aimed to apply a simple and low cost philosophy to ocean observation by developing an inexpensive low-profile surface drifter for use in initial assessment of potential tidal energy development opportunities. The project addressed limitations in the existing drifter de

Numerical Modeling of Tidal Turbine Behaviour under Real Turbulent Tidal Flow Conditions
December 2015 – December 2016
Researchers investigated and numerically quantified the behaviour of a tidal turbine under turbulent unsteady tidal flow, using flow data collected in the lower Bay of Fundy (Digby area).

Characterizing Tidal Flows and Turbine Power Production in Petit Passage using Oceanographic and CFD Models
September 2015 – March 2016
The goal of this project was to identify potential turbine deployment locations in Petit Passage Nova Scotia, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite volume coastal ocean models (FVCOM).

Turbulent Scale and Wake Modeling on a Horizontal Axis Turbine
January – April 2015
This project aimed to accurately simulate turbulent flow over a scaled horizontal axis tidal turbine to resolve turbulence in the near and far field regions.

Seasonal Erodibility of Sediment in the Upper Bay of Fundy
February 2012 – January 2015
This project developed methods for studying sedimentation to the macro-tidal flats of the upper Bay of Fundy. The researchers looked at seasonal variation in the erodibility of sediments in tidal creeks and flats using a Gust Erosion Chamber and repeated grain size surveys.

Tidal Energy Resource Assessment Map for Nova Scotia
March – October 2012
This project used numerical simulations and theoretical calculations to predict not only the power that can be extracted from the flow through a passage but also the reduction in flow through the passage.
