Community Geothermal Resource: Capacity Assessment and Training Program (GeoCAT)
March 2022 – November 2024
Working together with our partners, Net Zero Atlantic will build project development capacity for mid-depth geothermal energy-based projects in Mi’kmaw and rural Nova Scotia communities.
This project has two parts:

Phase III: Nova Scotia Geothermal Strategic Planning Proposal
March – May 2022
The Phase I and Phase II geothermal reports demonstrated that Nova Scotia needs to gather more subsurface data – in particular by drilling one or more exploration wells to further ‘de-risk’ the province’s mid-depth geothermal resources. For these wells to be helpful, they must be located in

Development of Acoustic Doppler Aquatic Animal Monitoring (ADAAM) for application to marine life movement in high-energy tidal channels
March 2018 – February 2021
Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) are a standard tool used for measuring ocean currents.

Multi-Scale Turbulence Measurement in the Aquatron Laboratory
July 2018 – July 2019
This project has two primary objectives - to characterize the flow and turbulence in the Aquatron facility pool tank using turbulence sensors calibrated against a traceable standard; and to test technologies for investigating the horizontal variability of turbulence in real-world tidal channels.

Integrated Active and Passive Acoustic System for Environmental Monitoring (ISEM)
August 2015 – May 2019
The project team will develop a novel environmental monitoring system that integrates data analysis software and active and passive acoustic sensors to provide real-time tracking of fish and marine mammals in high energy sites.

Remote Acoustic Measurements of Turbulence in High-Flow Tidal Channels during High Wave Conditions
April 2018 – April 2019
Many of the high-flow tidal channels targeted for worldwide in-stream hydro-electric development are impacted by surface gravity waves incident from a large exterior basin (e.g. the Bay of Fundy/Gulf of Maine/North Atlantic).

Using Radar to Evaluate Seabird Abundance and Habitat Use at the Fundy Ocean Research Center for Energy Site near Parrsboro, Nova Scotia
April – September 2018
Shore-based seabird surveys conducted at the Fundy Ocean Research Center for Energy (FORCE) in Parrsboro, NS, determine abundance, habitat use and potential risk to seabirds at the site.

Going with the Flow: Advancement of Drifting Platforms for use in Tidal Energy Site Assessment & Environmental Monitoring
April 2015 – August 2017
This research project aimed to apply a simple and low cost philosophy to ocean observation by developing an inexpensive low-profile surface drifter for use in initial assessment of potential tidal energy development opportunities. The project addressed limitations in the existing drifter de

Numerical Modeling of Tidal Turbine Behaviour under Real Turbulent Tidal Flow Conditions
December 2015 – December 2016
Researchers investigated and numerically quantified the behaviour of a tidal turbine under turbulent unsteady tidal flow, using flow data collected in the lower Bay of Fundy (Digby area).

Characterizing Tidal Flows and Turbine Power Production in Petit Passage using Oceanographic and CFD Models
September 2015 – March 2016
The goal of this project was to identify potential turbine deployment locations in Petit Passage Nova Scotia, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite volume coastal ocean models (FVCOM).
