Decarbonizing Nova Scotia’s Industrial Sector with Green Hydrogen

Three of Nova Scotia’s largest industrial manufacturers – Shaw, PHP, and Michelin – have formed a Decarbonization Working Group interested in investigating with NZA the feasibility and the GHG emission reduction potential of using hydrogen in industrial process heating.

This project sets out to explore the role that hydrogen can play in decarbonizing industrial process heating. 

Phase 1 of the project will involve conducting a public facing study aimed at providing valuable insights to stakeholders, including the Decarbonization Working Group, federal and provincial policymakers, industry organizations, and the public, regarding the integration of hydrogen technologies into industrial process heating applications in Nova Scotia.

Phase 2 will consist of a series of studies aimed at determining the feasibility of using hydrogen within each of the Working Group members' facilities for process heating, i.e. the operation of boilers or kilns.

The project is supported by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, Michelin North America Inc., Port Hawkesbury Paper, and The Shaw Group.
