On September 15, 2024, Natural Resources Canada announced its investment of over $9M for two projects led by Net Zero Atlantic, which are:
- Atlantic Canada Offshore Wind Grid Integration and Transmission Study
- Net Zero Emerging Concepts and Technologies Research Program
This significant funding is supporting:
- The delivery of a comprehensive report, which will include an offshore wind resource profile and investigate potential constraints and investments needed resulting from the integration of large-scale offshore wind projects on Atlantic Canada’s electricity grid. By doing this, the project will support national and provincial efforts to achieve net-zero emissions while contributing to economic development and new opportunities for both the Atlantic region and Canada as a whole.
- A program to directly fund research and development for promising emerging clean technologies, approaches, and practices. By doing this, academics and start-up companies are supported in proposing and testing novel or adapted ideas that could address hard-to-abate sectors and encourage economic development in Atlantic Canada.
When completed, the projects will be accomplishments of many Atlantic Canadians, including our committed partners, knowledgeable committee members, and all four provincial governments. For example, Net Zero Atlantic, Stantec, and E3 are drawing upon expertise of representatives from government and utilities, technical experts, and findings from other studies and jurisdictions as well as attracting observers from the United States public engagement activities for the offshore wind study. Also, Emerging Concepts & Technologies is supported by technical experts on the selection committee and through funding from the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Climate Change and the New Brunswick Office of Innovation through the New Brunswick Innovation Fund.
