Repurposing Used Electric Vehicle Batteries as Grid Energy Storage
May 5, 2022 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT
The battery-powered electric vehicle (EV) is a key technological solution needed to decarbonize the global economy, and production of new EVs is already growing exponentially. However, this solution also introduces a new problem: what will we do with many millions of used EV batteries when today’s EVs reach end of life? While cost-effective recycling will ultimately be critical, used EV batteries can first be repurposed as a more sustainable and affordable means to store energy on the electricity grid and expedite grid decarbonization.

Opportunities for Thermal Energy Storage and Demand Response
February 24, 2022 – February 24, 2202
In Nova Scotia, a large portion of the energy used in buildings provides space heating and hot water. This large heat energy demand is also an opportunity to store energy when it’s available, for later use, to respond to temporal variations in renewable energy supply. The NSCC Applied Energy Research team is working on several research projects with industry partners to develop and test systems for storing and managing heat energy.

EfficiencyOne White Paper 2050: Net-Zero Carbon Nova Scotia
January 13, 2022 1:00pm – 2:00pm AST
Nova Scotia has committed to be net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. While the province has achieved significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions since 2005, and is a leader in Canada, there is no single action that will get us to net-zero by 2050. Given the challenge to achieve net-zero, EfficiencyOne, in collaboration with Ralph Torrie, has authored a White Paper that explores the technological and related challenges and opportunities inherent in achieving a steep decline in greenhouse gas emissions and also identifies strategies to get to net-zero.

Hydrogen's Role in Global Decarbonisation
November 18, 2021 11:00am – 12:00pm AST
This webinar will review the potential for clean hydrogen to play a significant role in decarbonizing global energy systems, considering various production methods, demand drivers, and potential solutions for transporting hydrogen around the world. Factors influencing costs will be covered, as will policy and regulatory issues which will affect the rate of growth of this exciting new sector. The context will reflect OERA's interests in Atlantic Canada and the opportunities which clean hydrogen can be expected to bring to this area.
