Using radar data to evaluate seabird abundance and habitat use at the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy site near Parrsboro, NS
October 24, 2019 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT
Archived radar scans from an open-array Furuno marine radar installed to monitor the surface of the water at the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) site were assessed to determine if the data could be used to monitor seabird activity at the site. After filtering out areas with persistent interference due to waves, bird targets were successfully tracked using the radR program in the R statistical programming language.

Taking tidal energy research in the Bay of Fundy to the next level
July 25, 2019 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT
The potential economic benefits of commercial-scale tidal energy in Canada’s Bay of Fundy are substantial but past development of projects has been slow. Decisions regarding development and regulation of the tidal energy industry are hindered by knowledge gaps in scientific evidence. To address these gaps, our team of top Atlantic Canada researchers has obtained funding from CFI for cutting-edge infrastructure and from OERA for support of early career scientists.

eDNA Solutions for Species Detections in Tidal Energy Environmental Effects Monitoring
June 20, 2019 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT
Conducting environmental effects monitoring (EEM) investigations of tidal in-stream energy conversion (TISEC) devices in marine ecosystems is challenging in a naturally variable environments, particularly macrotidal systems like the inner Bay of Fundy (iBoF). Our project applied a novel technology for in-situ rapid species identification in high flow marine conditions using environmental deoxyribonucleic acid (eDNA) tools to build upon scientific evidence gained from national and international tidal turbine EEM programs.

FORCE Site Marine Operations Lessons Learned
March 21, 2019 1:00pm – 2:00pm ADT
In recent years, marine operators in the Bay of Fundy have attempted dozens of operations at the FORCE test site in the Minas Passage, from research surveys to instrument packages to electrical infrastructure to turbine deployment. Through both failure and success, these operations have yielded critical lessons for all teams involved and contributed to a valuable understanding of the approaches, methods, vessels, and equipment best suited to specific goals.
